Kitchen Design for First-Time Remodels

by Nivea Miller

For many, creating the kitchen design might be the most complicated aspect of the kitchen remodeling process. You may have collected tons of magazine clippings and compiled a list of kitchen design ideas, but you're still unsure of how to work with the space that you have. At StockCabinetExpress, we're not only here to help you find the best kitchen cabinets, we're also here to assist you in creating the perfect design. If you've already got your measurements down and know which cabinets you'd like to purchase, we offer free design services to help you put it all together. If you still think that you can probably do it on your own, here's a crash course on the different types of kitchen designs and why they may work for you:

L-Shaped Kitchen Designs

If you have a small kitchen, chances are you'll be utilizing an L-shaped kitchen design. This design situates the kitchen in a corner, allowing for an efficient use of your space. The close proximity of your sink, stove, and refrigerator minimizes the amount of movement necessary to prepare your meal. This kitchen style is perfect for a single cook, working within a small space.

U-Shaped Kitchen Designs

U-shaped kitchen designs are great for a wide range of kitchen sizes. Each of the main areas of activity (sink, stove, and refrigerator) will occupy one of the three walls in this design. This allows for greater countertop space for prep, and allows for more than one cook to be in the kitchen at once. For extra large U-shaped kitchens, a kitchen island with a cooktop or extra sink would be necessary, as too much travel space in the kitchen could be a nuisance.

G-Shaped Kitchen Designs

G-shaped kitchens are essentially U-shaped kitchens with an additional countertop extending from one side, usually for the purposes of dining. This additional countertop space also comes in handy when cooking large meals or entertaining large crowds, buffet-syle. The extra cabinets are great for storage and organization. G-shaped kitchen designs work much better in larger kitchens where there is enough space to accommodate the extra cabinets and countertops.

Galley Kitchen Designs

Galley kitchens are efficient uses of small spaces, especially for apartments and small condos. The countertops and major appliances run along two parallel walls with a narrow walkway in the middle. This simple kitchen design tends to be less expensive and simpler to set up. While the setup allows for great workflow, your work may be disrupted if there is constant foot traffic flowing through the kitchen.

Single Wall Kitchen Designs

Single wall kitchen designs can be utilized in spaces of just about any size, but they're particularly efficient in smaller spaces. In this design, all of your kitchen elements are lined along one wall. If you're limited in space, don't plan to use your kitchen for heavy cooking, and looking to save money, a single wall kitchen design is your best bet.
